Default Tensioner Jumping/ Tapping Video

I just changed out the filter and tranny fluid, when I started it back up I noticed a noise. I also noticed that the tensioner was bouncing a little. I noticed that it was bouncing after the cooling/timing overhaul. Now I hear a knocking or tapping sound about the same time the tensioner moves I have attached a video. I can't hear all that well, but I'm pretty certain I didn't hear this two weeks ago. Could I be so lucky that the tensioner is making the noise or get ready to pull the motor. I hope you can see and hear the short video. Thanks for any thoughts in advance!!!

Unfortunately, that sounds a lot like a rod knock...... You could try changing the tensioner.... but, don't hold your breath.

Thanks HeyYou. Yeah, that was my first thought. Then I thought maybe just maybe the tensioner. My third thought was a rod again. Shut the hood for the night.

Take the belt off and listen to it run. Let the motor get cooled down before you do it though.

This is a great idea. That audio clip was inconclusive to me - might be a rod knock or it could be something else. Best to try to isolate the sound by trying a few things - also, check the water pump shaft to see if the water pump is going bad. It should not have any side-to-side play.

Default What luck!!!!

Alright did what you recommended. HeyYou, didn't hold my breath, because I have no luck. racefan41, pulled belt and ran it when cool. Shockingly there was no tap/knock. Changed out the tensioner. After starting, looked at the tensioner and it wasn't bouncing anymore and no noise. Can you believe that #&!*.?. This never happens to me! Thanks for your input and time. Yes, I bought lottery tickets!!

Yeah, mine too. But it's time to replace mine again. Been a long time since I changed the idler and tensioner.

Having just fixed this problem myself, and after some research, the tensioner should hold a steady tension on your belt. If it's bouncing like mine was, change it. It's transferring that shock through the belt to other components. What component has the weakest bearing? Sorry, I'm marine machinery mechanic and NOT an automotive mechanic!!!
