Valve Lash 5.9 360 “Magnum”
Hello, I have a 1999 Dodge 1500 it has 208000 miles on a 5.9 360 engine. It has been a daily driver/work truck for many years. I recently have noticed a ticking when I am hauling a load up a hill. I have a miss on cylinder 6 so thought it might be spark knock I am replacing all of my plugs and wires here shortly. Along with the cap and rotor. I am also going to try to run a higher octane fuel (currently running on 87). I believe there is no adjustment for our valve train, if it continues ticking. Is there anyway to stop it? I didn’t know if tightening down the rocker arm bolts will stop the ticking. Any help on this matter would be terrific! My next question is how hard is it to tighten the rocker arm bolts if it does cure the ticking! Thanks!

Depends on why it's ticking. If it is valve-train noise, you can check and make sure you don't have a broken valve spring, or collapsed lifter, or rocker bolt coming loose.... but, that's about it. I would more suspect spark knock though. (these trucks are famous for it.) Have you checked your plenum yet? Check out the stickied thread at the top of this forum for information on that particular issue.

At those miles I would pull the intake ready to reseal it, pull the rocker covers, and clean the lifters - all while you're in there.
Rockers/lifters are an easy adjust, to where, when clean, they can adjust themselves.

Check the plenum gasket on the intake as they blow out causing oil to be sucked up from the lifter valley which cause it ping and/or tick, I changed the intake on my 95 Ram 1500 4x4 to the Hughes intake from Hughes Engines which made it run so much better with no tick or pinging also stopped it from burning oil and increased HP as well.
