after expanding my search a ways (ugh lol) I found a shortblock for $200. short of taking it to a machine shop, what can I look for to make sure its a good base to build off?

Short block meaning the heads and intake have been off? If they've been off for a while, you need to ensure there are not corrosion problems with the cylinder and lifter bores. Inspect what you can, then pour some oil down on the piston rings and slowly turn the crank over and continue looking for corrosion or lengthwise scratches/gouges. Might have water in the oil pan too, if its been sitting outside.

I offer this advice often here. Find a running specimen and don't worry about rebuilding it. Just clean it up, change out the sensors/plugs/cap etc. The magnums last a long time, they tend to run decent enough for a truck. Save your $ for other stuff.

The crower cam has a bit more lift, so, likely better power numbers. Comp cam likely wouldn't need a custom tune, but, would certainly take advantage of even canned tunes. (getting rid of torque management helps a fair bit.)

Pretty much the same thing. Its where you want your power, and will compliment the kegger nicely. Shorty headers would be good too.

I know there is a thousand threads on Headers... What's the consensus brand?

Lotta folks like the pacesetter longtubes, but, those are relatively large primary tubes, so, more suited to the upper RPM ranges.

I think there is a thread about headers in the faq section???
