Default 2000 Ram 1500 sputtering, revving issues

Hi all, New to the forum!
Im working on a buddies truck which is a 2000 ram 1500 with 360 magnum with only 130k on it. Im more knowledgeable about the diesel side of dodges, that said im running into some weird issues with his truck. First off when you start it up itll run fine maybe a very small miss here and there, then when you go to drive it sometimes falls on its face and run rough with half throttle, go to pull in somewhere and it will berally run or sometimes die.

First thing i told him was a tune up wouldnt hurt and might fix the issues. He only got plugs and wires so i put those in and cut off the catalytic converter. Without putting a piece of pipe on i started it to see if anything has changed. Load as all ****, i fired it up and when i just tap the gas peddle itll rev up to 1400 rom and stay there by itself for about 5-10 seconds and come back down, Which he said would happen sometimes before i ever touched it. There are no codes on the PCM or ECM, so it leads me to believe its something mechanical not electrical.

I havnt wrenched on a gasser dodge in a long time if anyone can throw me some advice it'd be greatly appreciated! thanks!

Have you checked the plenum? Read the sticky thread on that subject. Welcome to DF.

Sounds like a vacuum leak. Yup, the plenum can leak but also look for cracked broken or disconnected vacuum lines.

Either Intake or ignition I’d say but I only know so much and have never had a vacuum leak.

With the bogging out and dieing it sounds like you’re taking in too much air from somewhere.

To find a vacuum keep the truck at an idle. Spray vacuum hoses with starting fluid if there is a leak the idle will rise.
