Fan Clutch Removal
I drove from NC to Cleveland last week and thankfully as soon as I got here the water pump went and all my coolant hit the ground and not in the middle of West Virginia lol.
Ive got the old water pump off, but I don’t know how to get the fan clutch off. I don’t have any special tools and I’m doing this in the back of a parking lot lol. Any suggestions? I saw one guy on YouTube put a pair of vice grips on the water pump pulley (Still on the engine) and then turn that nut on the fan clutch loose, but is there a better way? Plus the old one is already off, I can put it back on if it makes it easier, but I’d rather not.

I have used both, ether a Crescent wrench or a pipe wrench and then hit the handle with a hammer to break it loose.
I have never done it off of the truck, I am sure that it can be done, just going to be more difficult.

ill put it back in the engine and try that trick with the pipe wrench when I go out there!

When I did my timing chain, no one carried the clutch tool so I wrapped an old belt around the pulley and clamped it with a vise grip which my Dad held and I pounded on the crescent wrench around the nut. Of course, a year later, I find the tool for sale in my local store.

I didn't even know there WAS a special too for that purpose. I just put the crescent wrench on the big nut, and whacked it with a hammer a couple times, before I removed the serpentine belt. Worked great. Used the same method on two more that I have done.

I bought the red handle tool from napa by itself. It has the pins in the end that go in the holes on the water pump pulley. Worked for my 98 Durango and my V10.

I got it with just a pipe wrench, vise grips, and a Mallot, much easier than I expected it to be haha, thank you.
I ripped that oring though for the little water hose coming out the right bank of the water pump, so I’ve gotta find one of those. I went to auto zone, got the little pack, but it was ripped open already....of course the one I needed wasn’t there lol.
going to old car city for a week with my family so when I get back I’ll get that done haha.
