Default 96 Ram 1500 2WD trans clarification

Ok so I've been searching through the forums and want to make sure I'm correctly interpreting the info II'm gathering. From what I understand is that in 96 they changed over to electronically controlled transmissions. There are 2 generations(?) 96-97 and 98-99? Those are interchangeable with a change of a couple solenoids? Pre 96 transmissions are not compatible with the 96 truck? So if I'm needing to replace my transmission in my 96 it should come ideally from a 96-97 but a 98-99 is easily adapted. I've got a 5.9 and all the flywheel and torque converter stuff so that's not an issue. Are the numbers cast into the case in any way an identifier? My case has 064-2 and I've got one transmission with 064-5 and one with 064-8. These are cast in on the bell housing area. How hard are these transmissions to rebuild if I decided to go that way. I do have a rebuild kit for it. Any and all help is appreciated on this as I'm not familiar at all with the 2ND Gen dodges. I used to have a 74 Dodge Charger with a 440/727 combo and that was so much simpler! LOL!

Thanks
Stephen

Any transmissions from 96-01 will work. 98-01 you need to change the harness and throttle body with the factory one. Rebuilding them isn't hard just really time consuming, and you need a press to do the overdrive unit

You need a trans from 96-97. Later model years won't have the provision for the VSS in the tailshaft housing, which you need for your speedometer.

You can swap housings or from the O/D section back

Isn't the tailshaft housing a separate piece on those? Wonder if you could just swap that out, provided the output shaft has provisions for the VSS drive gear.

They are separate just like on the 4wd. According to the parts books it's the same part number
