Default Nv3500 Swap No Start

Hey all, new to posting on forums. I’m working on a 2001 Ram 1500 4x4. I’m 90% done swapping my 46re out for a nv3500. I used 95_318SLT write up to do the majority of the swap. Everything’s all swapped in and ready to go. Hit the key and nothing. Doesn’t turn over. Hooked scan tool up and no useful information for a no crank. I’ve grounded the park/neutral safety switch. Currently have the clutch switch looped. Tried a new ASD relay. Jumped the starter solenoid. I currently have both sensors on the trans (back up light switch and speed sensor) not plugged in to anything. Wouldn’t think they would have anything to do with a no start. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Try jumping the starter relay. See if anything interesting happens.

Apologies for the typo. I stated “jumped the starter solenoid”. Meant the relay. Nothing happened. I believe there was power to one prong, and nothing on the others. After trying that, I watched a YouTube of the same issue, no cranking. There’s a brown wire coming from the fuse box, with a connector, and it ties in with the starter wiring. Took the connector apart and tried to jump it and nothing happened as well. Thanks for the quick response, HeyYou.

You should have battery voltage on pin 30 of the starter relay socket. If you jump that to pin 87, that should apply power to the starter solenoid, and the engine should turn over. If it doesn't, you need to check that wire, make sure it's hooked up, and not broken/pinched somewhere.

Sounds like a good plan. Will trace that wire tomorrow afternoon

Traced the wire and connectors, all fine. There’s power to pin 30 but nothing happens when crossed to 87. Trans temp light is on, not sure if there’s a safety in the auto that would prevent it from starting.

If you short pin 30, to 87, and nothing happens, but, you have voltage at pin 30, then the wire from the relay to the starter motor is bad. It's a direct path..... even with the ignition off, it should still roll the motor over.

Keep in mind, there are TWO pin 87's. 87, and 87a. 87a doesn't go anywhere.

Found the issue! We didn’t have any ground wires on the transmission. Threw some heavy gauge wire from starter to battery and the ol’ girl fired right up. Buttoning up some loose ends today and the swap will be complete
