Default Torque Converter Lockup Question.

This may or may not be normal. It's on my 01 Ram with the 360 and the 46RE transmission. I rarely drive this truck anymore, and I honestly can't remember how it's felt in the past. I really hadn't even noticed it now until a friend drove it and commented on it. He now has me questioning if it's normal or if I'm having an issue. I've had this transmission and torque converter for about 30k miles. So it's not new, but also doesn't have a ton of miles on it. It also has a shift kit in it and a bit of other work done to the transmission.

Anyway, if you are on the gas more than about 1/4th throttle, or above 2k rpm's or so once it shifts into 3rd, about a second later you can feel the torque converter lock up and the RPM's drop. Should it be locking up here? He asked why it was shifting again so soon, which is when I paid attention and realized that it's not shifting again. It's just shifting into third and waiting about 1 second before it locks up and the rpm drops, so it feels like a shift. It doesn't jump back and forth, doesn't feel like it locks and unlocks, if you give it more throttle it downshifts and revs up like normal, etc. It really drives completely fine other than this. It also doesn't do this if you're barely on the gas and keep it under 2k rpm's anyway.

So basically what I'm wondering is if this is normal? Should it be locking up in third like that?

That is indeed correct. Mine is the same way. (47RE) 1-2-3-lockup-O/D.

Mine is just a regular 46re that I'm almost certain has a Jr shift kit and nothing special done to it.

Thanks guys! That makes me realize it is normal. I should have known since it drives fine and I'd never really paid attention to it before, but my buddy had me questioning it. I'm glad to find out that it's normal.

It should lock in 3rd gear then go into overdrive, you can adjust the shifting with the TV cable on the throttle body.
