originally I found my drivers side left tire belt seperating. I replaced both front tires thinking that had to be the cause.
of course the ride is better now, but, at 45mph I still have a bouncing. my new tires were balanced so that shouldn't be an issue. I replaced the passenger side inner and outer bearings, but not driver side yet.
it feels like the front end is bouncing. after 45 it stops and below 45 there's no noticeable bounce. I haven't been to any higher speeds over 60 to see if the bounce vibrates at any other speed. I'll do that soon.
any ideas? the bearings are easy enough to replace so planned on doing that anyway.

If "bouncing" describes up and down motion it's likely the shock absorbers.

driving a 1996 ram 1500 ext cab, 5.2l 2wd.

I suspect the inner left driver bearing. I had to replace the right side and the inner was destroyed. rotor was bad too (very thin on one side).

when my new bearing set comes for the driver side I'll clean down to the spindle and re-install clean. at 275k mi I expect wear. but should I drain & replace the differential fluid? I don't imagine it ever being serviced.
can the drive train cause a vibration in the front end? it does whine a lot when I ease into the gas at speed.
also, I looked on one site and didn't see rear bearing sets for the rear wheels? I assume 2wd has wheel bearings.

Wouldn't hurt to service the rear diff..... especially if you don't know the last time it was done.

Axle bearings are easily available at any parts store. (or online....) Just one on each axle. Don't recall if they are pressed on or not... If they aren't making noise, I wouldn't worry about them.

Jack up the front end, and wiggle the tires. Put your hands at 12:00 and 6:00, see if anything moves. Do the same at 3:00 and 9:00. If there is any slop, need to find it, and fix it.

 

The bouncing tire feeling sounds exactly like bad shocks. My 99 2500 was doing that. Replaced the front shocks problem solved. To bad I didn't do it soon enough before it caused funny wear patterns on the two front tires.

 

I just put tires on. gonna replace front shocks soon. I've been up to 70 today. only slight vibration if any. I can't tell but I am sure it's there.

wouldn't be so bad but 45mph is a very common speed here. I find myself goin 50 or 40 to avoid the shake.

I'm sure I have slop in the front end. at least I know bearings and large there adjusters (or where are) for caster and camber?

​​​​​​going to go through bushings too. would like to avoid ball joint replacement for now. replace shocks.

motor throws an 43 code then it doesn't. no pattern or identifiable cause I can associate with it.

my question is won't new shocks just mask the problem if something is causing the vibration I need to still fix it.

 

I would be tempted to have the tire balance rechecked as well. If they used 'balancing beads', get them out, and have them do the job the right way. (balancing beads were a cool idea, that never worked right.....)

Rear diff is easy, pull cover, drain fluid, clean it out, replace cover, (with either a gasket, or RTV,) refill with fluid.
