46RE trans
I been looking for a transmission for nearly a year at a reasonable price to rebuild for my truck.
Recently 2 have popped up on craigslist in my area.
The 1st is a 46re out of a 96 4X4 with 144,000 miles for $400.00
The 2nd is a 46re out of a 98 4X4 for $225.00 mileage is unknown.
What I have in mind is a total rebuild, no matter which one I buy, naturally I would prefer the cheaper of the two.
If I go with the one out of a 1998, will I run into any problems trying to use it in my 1996 ?

Ideally, you need a trans from a 96 or 97 truck. If you are going to rebuild it anyway, doesn't really matter if it works or not, so long as the case is in good shape, you'll be golden.
Also, the trans needs to come from a truck with the same number of drive wheels. 2 or 4 wheel drive transmissions are not precisely interchangeable.
Yes, it is, 97 and older, the trans has the bosses for the shifter mount. 98 and up won't have 'em.

Yup, shift pattern on t-case also changed, and the 98 and newer t-case won't have the provision for VSS. There is no good workaround for that I am aware of.
97 and older trucks, the t-case shifter bolts to bosses on the trans, 98 and up, the shifter bolts to the body, and the bosses on the trans are probably not there. The newer the trans, the less likely they will be there. (on 99 and up, I would not expect them to be there, ever.....

On the 4x4 trucks, the VSS is on the tailhousing of the t-case. If you are using the original case, then that bit doesn't matter.
