Just for some background. I bought truck with only 62,000 miles last summer. The front axle was damage from an accident. I replaced axle and transfer case as that broke as well. Then I don't know what happened if it was oil pump failure or what but engine locked. So I found another engine and replaced that. I'm no mechanic and this was my first and hopefully last engine swap. I was sort of forced to do it because the body is almost perfect with no rust. Just some background for you guys. Is there a way i could have reversed a wire at some point and the overdrive situation is just reversed. It's not a big deal either way for me but it's odd and opposite of my 2004 dodge ram. When i turn the tow haul button in that rpms go up. Which is what you would expect.
Did you cut into any of the wires? If not then no it's not possible
I don't think you are getting O/D, turning O/D off, seems to be allowing the torque converter to lock, so, you get a 200 RPM drop, or so. O/D makes a MUCH bigger difference in RPM. Need to scan for codes, and see if any are pending. Also, does your check engine lite work??? If the PCM commands O/D, and doesn't see the RPM drop, it *should* set a code......)
Agree with the post above, if the pictures are taken driving on level ground then there's something else wrong. The transmission is not in overdrive as the RPMs are too high, even for 4.10s. My truck has the same engine and gearing and it does 65 mph at 2k RPM. I think what's happening is that when O/D is turned off the PCM locks up the torque converter because there won't be any further upshift.
As for why it doesn't go into O/D, I'd venture the PCM does not see the required condition. Some sensor reading way off or similar.
Now that I think about it, actually doesn't matter what the tire size if the speedo is uncorrected. My truck is a 2000 3/4 ton with 4.10s . Has 33" tall tires on it now, and the speedo tends to be 10% low. But with the speedo uncorrected, OverDrive enabled, and going 55 on flat, first pic. Second pic at 50 mph (a little slower, I sux), OverDrive disabled. I think this is proof that there is no way your trans is in OD. You've been into the engine, front axle, and now you get to explore the transmission... at least you don't have to go looking at the rear axle !
Well I might owe everyone an apology for wasting their time.
I left out one key detail that I believe was the issue. It's been between -5 and -25 degrees farenheit w/o windchill.
In my 2004 dodge ram the transmission doesn't shift into overdrive until it warms up which is usually within the first 5 miles or so. I believe this 2001 most take allot longer or maybe something was frozen up.
today it was 23 degrees and it shifted perfectly and was for sure in overdrive as rpms was around 1500 at 55 mph or so. When I hit the overdrive off button it downshifts and rpms jump up.
According to theory, the PCM won't shift into O/D until trans temp is 108 degrees or so. I am not sure just how accurate that is, as mine will shift into O/D at right around an indicated 40mph, regardless of temp, and how long I have been driving it. I seriously doubt the trans gets to 108 in less than a mile of driving, when we have sub-zero temps.... but, it still shifts into O/D at about the same point in my drive to work.

Those lights make my OCD go crazy I have lights on in my dash

I don't get O/D until my transmission is 100° that temp is according to the torque app.
