Default Overdrive question

2001 dodge ram 1500 sport. 5.9 with 4.10 gears.

Plans to be my kids first truck. I've been test driving. If im driving with cruise set 50mph and rpms are around 2500 just for example.

if I push the overdrive off button the rpms drop?
I would think they should go up not down. If it's no longer in overdrive or overdrive off it should be in a lower gear so the rpms should increase.

Am I missing something? Is something backwards?

thanks

When you push the button, does the O/D lite go off, or on? By default, from the factory, O/D should be on, I.E. Lite off. Push the button, the lite comes on, and O/D is off. 50 mph at 2500 rpm tells me you are NOT in o/d. Some folks modify the system so it defaults to off. So, when you first start the truck, is the O/D Off lite on?

When I start the vehicle the overdrive light is off. When I push the button while driving the overdrive off button will turn go on the dash. But then the rpms go down?

Find a highway where you can stop gun the truck see if it shifts 3 or 4 times. Then do the same when you push the button

If you have factory size tires and an optional higher gear ratio (3.92?), you might see the rpms that high. On the plus side, if you find that the trans is indeed using the OD feature of the transmission - you're a good candidate for oversize tires.

I've got factory 4.10 gears with stock tires .

Just for some background. I bought truck with only 62,000 miles last summer. The front axle was damage from an accident. I replaced axle and transfer case as that broke as well. Then I don't know what happened if it was oil pump failure or what but engine locked. So I found another engine and replaced that. I'm no mechanic and this was my first and hopefully last engine swap. I was sort of forced to do it because the body is almost perfect with no rust. Just some background for you guys. Is there a way i could have reversed a wire at some point and the overdrive situation is just reversed. It's not a big deal either way for me but it's odd and opposite of my 2004 dodge ram. When i turn the tow haul button in that rpms go up. Which is what you would expect.
