Several folks on here have rebuilt their own, and they had never been inside an auto trans before. The biggest pain is that huge spring for the O/D. Need a press to remove/install. The rest is just basic hand tools, and precision measuring equipment. (which you can likely rent.....) There are a LOT of good resources on the web for just such an exercise.

Rumor has it, the hard parts from the 48RE will fit inside the 46 case..... In which case, you get a trans that will be rather hard to break. Red Alto clutches/steels, a good seal kit, and an assortment of 'other' little parts, and you are down the road. Several of the big name trans sites offer completely rebuild kits as well, with high quality premium parts. (wittrans, PATC, etc.)

In the old MonteC's Transmission corner thread, on page 6, MonteC had a parts listing for a member that regularly towed a 7K pound trailer, and wanted his trans to last. I used to have a 'translation' of it, that indicated what each part was, and current pricing. (which would be FAR out of date by now in any event.) Some parts in the list were duplicates, depending on what year trans you were dealing with. But, that seems to have fallen into the bit bucket. (several harddrives, and at least one O/S upgrade since then.) I have no idea what happened to it.

I personally will never rebuild another auto transmission, I'll leave that to the professionals who offer a warranty

All well and good, if you can afford to pay them.

Not to derail this thread but now I’m super curious. What was the outcome of both of them? If I may, why will you never touch one again?

@HeyYou I will be looking for that thread just because I can never have enough reading material on it. I’m fortunate that my job has a press on site, that seemed to be about the biggest issue as far as specialty tools. I think it’s mostly time and patience and following instructions by the letter and being organized. Have you ever rebuilt one? How did it go?

Both of them lasted and last I heard still going. I won't touch one because it's just a pain in my opinion and I would rather spend another 1K to get a 3 year warranty.

I have done one. But, it was a GM trans, and it was a LONG time ago. I haven't had the need to do one again..... and given my current situation (age, health issues) I don't think I would wanna tackle that job again. I wouldn't even wanna do a trans swap at this point. Now, were I 20 years younger, (and still healthy.....) I think it would be an adventure. Would certainly learn a lot......

I will keep that stuff in mind when the time an resources come available to tackle the project. As my trans has 204000 miles as far as I know. Seems to have a few loose bands I guess? I’ve adjusted the bands a couple different times. In either event. The trans an transfer case are the next things I’d like to get refreshed. Thanks for the information guys!
