Default New Ride

Picked up a new ride last weekend. 98 4X4 5.9, Auto, 171k, rebuilt tranny Well taken care of, the PO added a backup camera, remote start, Bluetooth stereo, sub inside rear seat console etc...The PO had paperwork where he had work done to the rear end. He had new ring and pinion, axel seals and bearings. I traveled about 270 miles to pick it up and on the way home, i could hear a whine from what sounds like the rear end. It is quiet when off the gas, makes a whine when on the gas, and louder if I give it more gas. I assume from reading here that the shop probably did not setup the gear set properly. Anyone have any input? Change to a different gear lube to maybe quiet it down? Work was done over a year ago, so it should not be any type of break in issue, it that is even a thing. Also, truck would shake, mainly between 60-70 on the way home, not excessive, but definitely not smooth. Seemed to shake more often than not at those speeds. With the cruise on, it would be fine, then just start shaking. At first I was thinking tire balance, but then thinking maybe transmission mount. I could not feel the shaking through the steering wheel at all, so probably not a front end issue? It is not a misfire shake, engine is smooth. BTW, my headlights really suck, they look cool, but don't light up the road very well, they are tinted so I am sure that can't help, but are there any bulb recommendation I could try to brighten them up?

Try rotating the tires, and see if you vibration changes at all.

Whining from the rear, and your vibration may also be related...... Think I would jack it up, and turn things by hand, see if anything feels wonky. (yes, that's a technical term. )

I think I did see the term "wonky" in the FSM... I will rotate the tires this weekend if not before and see if that changes anything, and also check driveline while on jacks...Good advice...

I've been chasing a vibration for about a year now. Check engine and trans mounts, tire balance, see if the driveshafts have any shiny spots where a weight may have fell off.

Brakes, ujoints, and tires are good culprits for vibes. I searched for years until I changed tires.

Well I rotated the tires the other day and that seemed to take almost all of the vibration out. I was sort of surprised since the truck has newer tires on it and i have receipts from the PO rotating the tires a few times. Will probable get them all re-balanced soon as well. Whining noise is still there, may change the differential oil and see if that has any effect. Thanks HeyYou
