Default Remove and replace AC Compressor 99 1500

So I'm already elbow deep in the top end of the engine, on the way to a plenum gasket replacement since I have the throttle body off(as suggested by a couple experts here). In doing so, instead of just swinging the AC Compressor out of the way, I decided that I may as well replace it, since the AC isn't working(didn't work when I bought the truck). I'm unable to locate in the manual how to remove the pump(perhaps someone smarter than me can give me a page number). Before I go disconnecting any lines, what's the first step? Do I need to remove the freon first? I don't want bad things to happen.

Technically you are suppose to get the freon evacuated but you can just crack the bolt that holds the hoses to the compressor loose and let it into the atmosphere. Then there are 2 or 3 bolts holding it to the bracket and one electrical plug.

Thanks for your quick response, as always. I took the a-frame bracket off and it appears that there are 2 bolts that go through the pump, itself. The manifold on top of the pump has one vertical bolt. It appears that's the one you're talking about to remove the lines from the pump. I'm not real concerned about any seals/o-rings getting damaged, since the kit that I'm ordering comes with all new ones, as well as a new evaporator and one of the lines, I believe.

This gives me an excuse to buy a vacuum pump!

Yes there should be 2 going through the pump (if memory serves me right) and the one on top. Why do you want a vacuum pump?

Vacuum pump needed to evacuate the system on installation, no?(dude posted a video that showed it)

You need to yes. But honestly you don't have the machines to recharge it. It has to have a SPECIFIC oil to freon ratio. I just pay mmt local garage to do it

In that case, just put the PAG100(or whatever it calls for)in it, then take it down the street to have it charged?

Personally I would do that. Add the amount of oil and then have them charge it

Honestly I’ve never vacuumed my a/c system down. My compressor was locked up when I bought my truck back in 05. Put a junk yard compressor on it put some pag oil in and charged it from some cans. It worked fine and cold for 10 years then I hit a deer. I just put that same compressor on my ram a few weeks ago and did it the same way no issues

Tech sheet says 32oz of freon and 8oz of PAG100. Does 8oz seem like a lot to y'all?
