Default Code p0720 vehicle speed sender.

My truck has that code showing. Saying bad vss. So I replaced it.
But it still continues to show that code.
Truck is shifting oddly and slipping a bit. Deffenitly not shifting when it should be. I dont have the proper tools with me to test the plug wires. As I am out of town.
Need to drive 400 miles up and down a lot of hills with a load. Worried that it may mess up my tranny more. Driving it with this problem.
Has anyone else had this problem.
If so what all did you have to do to fix it?
Its a 97 ram 1500. 4x4. 5.9lt.

That's not the VSS. The output speed sensor is on the trans. Drivers side of trans.

Default Your right.

I had three different parts stores employees tell me there is only one or that the. Vehicle speed senser and the output speed senser are the same thing. One store said that the 97 only had one senser. Newer years have two.
So I went to Napa. They show me one. (The one I replaced already)
Then search again and found the right one.
Thanks for your help. I made it back to Portland. Or.
The check engine light has stayed off too.

I know this is old, but I had (actually still have) this issue on my 1998 1500 van. Same code (shaft out put speed sensor, according to a code reader). Some called it engine/transmission speed sensor. That's the one on the trans. Replaced it, no change. Code also remained the same. Someone on the tube also had this issue, changed the same sensor, still no change. He then changed the other sensor, the one on the transfer case, which solved his issue. My local autozone could not find this part as output anything. The oldtimer who helped me, who also works on old/antique vehicles, typed in "wheel speed sensor" and up popped the correct part (the one on the transfer case) and said "well, it does make sense". As he explained it, newer vehicles have one of these on each wheel, whereas older vehicles have this one on the transfer case, I guess to "sense" wheel speed. So I follow suit and sport another $40.00+, but no joy for me. The code is gone, but the behavior persists. Strangely enough I now have a specific cylinder misfire, after changing all my spark plugs. So now I'm looking at my o2 sensor, since the symptoms seem to match. Just goes to show you how one symptom can have many different origins. Confused? I am...But, HeyYou is right, the output speed sensor, or vehicle speed sensor, is on the trans, the one on the transfer case is the wheel speed sensor..

The Vehicle speed sensor was on the tailhousing of the trans, or transfer case, (depending on number of drive wheels) up through 97. In 98, the VSS went away, and dodge started using the rear wheel speed sensor on the rear differential for the speedometer. So far as I know, starting in 96, with the RE versions of transmissions, there *should* be an output speed sensor on the trans itself. The sensor should be in the same location, on 96 and up transmissions, regardless of the number of drive wheels.

Resolution: It turned out to be a vacuum leak. None of the other things I did or changed out (both sensors) made a difference. Fixing a vacuum leak I stumbled on DID.
