2001 4x4 New Tranny or No new Tranny
I am seriously thinking about installing a remanufactured transmission. I'm around 500 miles shy of 200000. This will be the second one. This current one has kicked out of OD a few times and set off the trans overheat light once in the last year or so. It has not thrown any codes or trigger the check engine light. Also the front seal, or the one that leaks from the bell hosing is leaking about an eighth of a court a day. I am actually catching it straining it and pouring it back in.
I have the tools minus a lift. Pretty sure I get it high enough to clear everything. Not being able to move around like I used to I think will be the hardest part. This truck still runs / shifts good as hell. Would really like to hear your ideas/opinions. So do it my self? or save some first aid kit supplies and fork over probably another grand to have a shop do it? Thanks as always.

00t444e, I am definitely thinking that also. I've been checking some shops. Have heard that a remanufactured tranny would last longer because it get's tested better? Is that a sales pitch? Also this truck didn't come with a cooler, it's cooled through the radiator. It will get an extra cooler though. Seen some good info on here on them. Thanks.
2bit, I am east coast. I've learned a ton of info from that corner. I still ain't tearing into one. Tried one in the 70's, it didn't go too well. I'll look for that shop also. Thanks.

Reman transmissions can be hit and miss depending on the company, if you want a reman you best bet would be to order one from a smaller company that specializes in building Mopar transmissions. The 46RE transmission design has been around for a long time, you can often find a local guy that knows what upgrades to do so it will last longer than if it just had a factory spec rebuild.

And: I don't really see the point in rebuilding to 'stock' specs. These transmissions weren't the best when they were new..... So, doing some upgrades in the process of rebuilding is a great idea.
