Side note: what the heck size is this axle nut? I can’t get the right fit socket. 36mm was too small.

1-11/16 or 43mm. On a D60.

Thanks everyone for the help but mission failed. The hub nut is seized despite my best efforts of soaking with PB blaster multiple times overnight. Broke the breaker bar, which I’ve never done before.

Ah, so you never had the hub off yet. It sounded too easy to be true. Good luck with that.

I may call this one quits and pay a mechanic.

If you are changing just the u-joints, you don't necessarily need to remove the stub shaft from the hub. I've done it couple of times, because I didn't have correct size socket, nor big enough torque wrench.
You mentioned clunk when you're at the maximum steering angle, I'm quite sure it came from the RH u-joint. I had slight tick somewhere from the front, didn't find any source for it, until later on I took tight corner and heard and felt huge clunk or bang, turns out it was the RH u-joint which was just a moments away from destroying ears from the axle shafts. Had to remove the inner shaft at the side of a road to get back home.

Also that ratcheting sound, remove the fill plug from the diff cover, and confirm that the sound is actually coming from the diff. I'm 99% sure it's the spiders, but there's always a chance that it may be something else.
