Let's say I end up with all the right parts how in the hell do I line that Park rod up to go into its home in the valve body?

No you have an RH anything above 96 is an RE

If you don't already have one, grab the service manual for your truck from here. Check the transmission section, there should be some pics showing how the park rod goes in. I know they are a pain......
