The tone ring goes on the carrier, the gear ratio makes no difference on how the tone ring fits.

Doesn't it fit between the ring gear, and the carrier? Does the gear need to be thinner to account for the tone ring?

There is a groove in the carrier for the tone ring, once it's on the tone ring is even with or slightly below the ring gear mounting surface on the carrier, it doesn't interfere with the mounting of the ring gear at all.

I do know a guy on another forum tried to install 99 Ram 9.25 gears into his 15 ram with the 9.25 and it wouldn't fit

This may be why...
"Requires notched cross-pin Chrysler9.25-XPIN or installer must grind ring gear teeth."
