Engine Balancing on a 360 Question

Default Engine Balancing on a 360 Question

This is kind of a long shot but figured I'd see if anyone had some info.

Wondering what people now about the balancing of an engine on Magnums vs LA. Ive seen everyone and their dog having a different opinion on what has to be done to make one compatible with the other.

85 W150 came with a 318 in it so pulled that out and chucked it, had a 727 transmission behind it. Wanting to place a Magnum 360 in its place. I know an LA 360 and a Magnum 360 are also weighted different. I also know a 318 and a 360 are weighted differently. Just can't find much about what has to be done to make things happen.

Are magnum 360 torque converters neutrally balanced? I wont actually get to see what it has for weights (junkyard engine with good compression). I know the TC in the W150 has no weights added to it so it should be neutrally balanced.

​​​​​​If that's the case then I would assume that as long as I get a full 360 M engine , with the flex plate still attached, then with the exception of a slight modification on the flex plate to make one hole line up then it should just drop in? That would theoretically be a balanced unit itself and then the torque converter would also be neutrally balanced so then everything is happy and away we Go? I only ask this because I keep hearing talk of some B&M part being needed that I'm trying to figure out.

Get the 360 mag flex plate and the matching torque converter. I had some issues when I did my 5.2 to 5.9 swap and grenades a trans. Dunno if it was for sure the problem but mixing and matching an obd1 94 5.9 flex plate to an obd2 96 5.2 tc was a bad idea

The thing is I don't think a 46RE TC will nicely match up to a 727 transmission. I'm planning on picking up a high stall down the road that will definitely be neutrally balanced but for now I need to figure out how to mate the two.

It's just something about some of them used a weighed flex plate and a neutral TC and some used a neutral flex plate and a weighed TC but not alot of details I can find

No idea, haven't had any experience with the 727s. Thought u were gonna go with a 46re

Nah, I guess I didn't specifically say that. I'll add that as an edit to be clearer.

I've had more trouble than not with my daily driver 46RE that I wouldn't want to use another. Want to put a transmission behind it that can just handle abuse and as little electronics as possible.

What you need is a converter for your 727 transmission that is balanced neutral. ie for a 318........ Then you need a flexplate for a 96-03 5.9 magnum..... The balance weight is on the flexplate for those years.
The 93-95 5.9 used a balance weight on the converter, and a neutral flexplate..... so that will not work...
Also, if you plan to keep factory fuel injection, you will need to notch the bell housing for the crankshaft sensor....

Ok, awesome that's what I thought but nice to hear someone confirm it. Yeah I have a 318 TC (727), and I'm putting an electric fuel pump + deleting the fuel injection side. I have an Edelbrok 750 Performer and a matching Air Gap intake to simplify things. Kept all the carburetor ignition parts off the 318 so should be pretty simple to do once I drop it in and make a kickdown / throttle linkage for the carb.

Be aware the 727 isn't that reliable and I would recommend at least building it up. Also if you are doing anything to the 360 have a shop externally balance it so you don't need any weights on the flex plate and can use a harmonic balancer

I am in the middle of doing something like that. I have a 87 dakota, have a 5.9 magnum out of a 2000 ram. I am re-ringing it, with all bearings..... Going to use the 7577 edelbrock intake and a 670 street advenger carb..... Mine is a 5 speed, so I need a flywheel.
