Default 5.9 magnum Recommend a Cam

  • I"m looking for a mid-range cam that would compliment the other mods on my truck. The truck is a 98 Ram 1500 Sport QC 4x4 5.9 Magnum Auto 106,000 miles that I just got so so bear with me. The current mods include .....4.56 gears on 35s.....Cold air intake.... Shorty Headers.....MSD coil and wires.....Hypertech tuner.....Supposed to have a 2200 rpm Stall Converter?....It may already have a mild cam in it .456 lift ex but that hasn't been determined for sure quite yet so for now let's call it stock? If or when I decide on a cam swap I have a Hughes air gap intake that will replace the kegger. I should also note the intake, valve covers, timing cover and oil pan are off so now would be the time to do it. I'd prefer not to get into something that required a bunch of tuning and would work well with the Hypertech tuner (of which I know nothing). So all things considered anyone have or had a cam they would recommend ?

Couple different manufacturers make cams that are 'computer friendly', but, for the money you spend, you really don't get much, and it likely won't go well with the rest of your mods. If you want to get the most out of it, really need to do some other work as well. Max lift on stock heads is .480, you are spending a bunch of money in other areas, why skimp on the cam/tuning?

I'm fine with buying the heavier springs and retainers whatever the cam calls for but I'm hesitant when it comes down to the ecm stuff. Not because of the money but because I have never messed with it. It has that Hypertech Tuner and the ecm has been changed so I'm assuming those are plug and play but I really have no idea how it works.

Using the Hypertech (not they good anyhow) you would restore it to factory settings then email a company of what you have them will send a custom tune you load into the computer

I think you get the wide choice of a whole two different tuners.... Flyin' Ryan, or HemiFever...... I do believe they both use SCT tuners, so, you would use your hypertech to set it back to stock, and then use the SCT for tuning from there on out. For custom tunes, I don't think Ryan does email tuning anymore, at least, not for the initial tune. He wants to be there with the truck. Which means you have to get him there, make sure he has a place to stay, food to eat, etc....... I think the details are on his website..... HemiFever still does the email tunes, I do believe, you send him complete engine specs, and he sends you a tune. Run it for a bit, (data logging required) and he will tweak it for you, to get it to run the best it can. Personally, in-person tuning seems like it would be the best bet, but, it's also the most expensive.

Another option would be to buy the HPTuners stuff, and do your own tuning. Steep learning curve, but, you can tweak it to your hearts content.

Yet another option would be to buy a standalone self-learning controller. A pain to install, but after that, it gets real easy.

Flyin' Ryan Canned tune +x3 sct $449 ...Custom tune +x3 sct $699 ...From what I gather he does email Tunes. I can see I need to read up on all this before I do anything. I wonder if I skip the cam for now if the Hypertech will recognize the airgap. If I change to an sct + cam I might as well do better heads and if I do that then I might as well do the bottom end. LoL
I can see my plenum fix has opened a big ol can of worms. At this point I may just button this motor up and drive it and build new a complete motor to go in later.

Check out Comp cams 20-746-9, You can use it as a stock replacement or with a tune. Do need stiffer springs though.
