Default 2001 dodge ram 1500 5.9 sport oil pressure goes to zero

hi, the problem I'm having is the truck will loose oil pressure drop to zero at idle seems to happen more when truck is warmed up. If driving oil pressure stays around 40 and fluctuates but when stopping at a stop light it goes down a little bit. If driving like 20 mph after going 40mph the pressure will go to zero. After pressure drops to zero it takes a while to come back up while driving sometimes it doesn't come back up till the next time you drive it. I changed the sending unit it didn't help. The truck sounds good when oil pressure goes to zero i don't hear any rattle or knocking or ticking. What could be my problem any help would be appreciated also could it be the actual gage in the dash?

Have you tried connecting in an external gauge to the sending unit port to see if your cluster is getting a bad reading? Also I believe if you go and hold down the trip reset button and turn the key ahead your dash will go through a test mode and see what all the gauges are doing.

Hi, no I have not tested with a gauge yet I will though soon. What is the oil pressure supposed to be at when at idle when warmed up? After I test it with a gauge and if the oil pressure checks out what would i do then?

See what oil pressure does first. If that's good, run a cluster test. Just hold down the trip/reset button, turn the ignition On, (not start) when the test starts, release the button. All lights should come on, all gauges should go thru a full sweep.

If I had to hazard a guess though, I would suspect a bad connection at the sensor, or, just a bad sensor. Doesn't matter that it's new...... Wouldn't be the first time someone got a bad part, right out of the box.

According to theory........ on a fully warmed engine, anything over 10 PSI is "acceptable"....... Then it should be another 10 PSI per 1000 RPM up to about 60 PSI or so, if your engine ever gets that far. A lot depends on the condition of the bearings and such.

OK, thank you for the information, I also have another problem that I talked to you about a while ago with the o2 sensor heater circuits on both sensors. I still have the codes for p0031 and p0037 I have replaced the sensors with ntk like 3 times replaced the catalytic converter with one from Napa and the computer was replaced by dodge, what else could be causing the problem with the o2 sensors?

Low voltage on the heater circuit. I *think* there is a fuse, and a relay for those. Replace them both.

I don't recall if it is on another circuit, or all by itself. Wiring diagrams should show it. If you don't have 'em, grab the service manual for your truck from here.
