Tow rating and GCVWR is posted on my door sticker on my 01 along with payload. I know a cop stopped me and scanned the barcode which he said told him ny towing capacity. I have towed illegal weight before just not wanted the OP to get in trouble

Can you post a picture of the sticker? That is the first I have ever heard of of a cop checking for your weight capacity or anyone scanning a barrier for your ratings. Never had that happen to me and I also know several people who use their pickup truck to haul for a living and they have never had anything like that done either. None of the DOT checkpoints or weigh stations do anything like that that I have seen or heard of.

Yeah when I get back home I'll snap a pic if my buddy didn't already scrap the factory doors. It was an odd experience he told me to step out looked at the sticker, scanned it just to verify it and weighed me. Then told me I was 8 pounds before my GCVWR. He didn't care that the axle still had about 4000 more according to the sticker

I am gonna bet that the doors have conveniently already been scrapped by the time you get home, LOL.

The topic of "legal tow rating" comes up every couple of weeks like clockwork on RV related sites. There is no such thing. There are other limits, axle ratings, individual vehicle and trailer ratings, combined weight as it relates to the drivers license and finally safety considerations but nothing prevents you from towing 2000 lbs more than the truck is rated for. It might stall out on a hill or the transmission grenades and then you have a problem. Proof point are commercial hot shot truckers that register their vehicles for a gross combined weight of 38k or more. Unless they have a fairly new truck that exceeds typical tow ratings by quite a bit.

That might be a registration thing in your state. Do you pay registration by weight ?
