Chrysler admits Catalytic converters bad 1996-2001
Well I hope I get a letter from dodge soon. Mine is crazy loud and my milage dropped from 12.5 to 9.7mpg .
Do you think they will find me? I got it used form the forest service out of state.

I was wondering too if they'd fine me, seeing I'm the third owner of the truck. I sure hope so [&:] I guess all they ahve to do is follow the title and whos name its in.
yep, i own one of the affected trucks as well. Have noticed MPG falling off and difficulty starting after an hour of off time. cannot detect any rattling in the converter and never failed a smog test. i recieved the letter in question about the converters and the so called recall on them. The dealership said they will do a flow test to the unit to see if its plugged up or not and effect repair from there.
lets see what happens now!

I recieved my letter yesterday and will hang on to it since it now covers 120,000 and 10 years but right now mine is not rattling but might talk to the stealership to see if they will check it for no cost. I wish I had recieved the letter sooner as they would reinburse me if it had been replaced but only have to jan 4th for it to have been replaced.

You should not need a letter. My dad bought a Caravan two years ago and took it to the dealer for some work. The boys in the shop informed him that the vehicle was identified as one that needed work done per Chrysler. It didn't cost him a dime. The manufacturers will pay to have the vehicle repaired, their biggest problem (and the dealer's as well) is trying to locate all of the vehicles.
Everybody having a Dodge Ram should be getting there letter about now, got mine Friday, and I think if your over the 80,000 mark it isnt covered any longer, regardless if its bad.
So can I just walk into the dealer service department and have this taken care of? I'm the 2nd owner of this 97' Ram. Will I need to print off this letter to have it taken care of?
dealer should be able to just run the VIN # and you should be good to go.
fair warning though, according to the letter that dodge sent out, unless you vehicle failed a smog test, if the cat is rattling, or if a certain engine code came up, they wont replace at this time, only extend the warrenty on it.
in my case, none of the fore mentioned items was happening. they did a flow test on mine and it was ok, (99 ram with 43k) i was liable for the flow test they did because it passed, however, while i was there, another code came up that told them i had a broken snap ring in my transmission(who knew) that they would check. sure enough, they found it, and are now rebuilding my tranny all covered by my warrenty.

I called chrysler the other day after getting my letter the woman I talked to said that even if you had your cat replaced in the past just submit the "original" bill and they would consider full reimburstment. mail the bill and a brief letter explaining the sistuation to them. No letter is needed.
