Did my electric fan install mess with my trans temp?
I installed 2 16" electric fans, with an on at 170 degree an off at 145 degree seems to keep the truck pretty cool.
my issue is about 1 day after my fan install my truck threw a code P0740 torque converter clutch solenoid, at that time i hasnt installed (recieved) my sensor so i was running my fans off a toggle switch, I'll admit might've let it get too warm a time or two. If was only for one day that i ran without a fan sensor switch.
Anyway i deleted that code hopin it might've been caused by getting too warm.. well the code came back this time my fans are automated an have been doing great at keeping my truck gauge at the same spot as my mechanical fan did.
(Although I'm sure it's alot cooler, based on the temp coming out of my heater)
big question for me is could my transmission be getting to warm? Truck doesn't seem to be slippin at all.

Check the connection at the 8 pin connector on the trans. Might test resistance across the solenoid as well, though, that is quite an exercise, given the location/orientation of the connector on the trans......
I will first check connection. If i am correct, from the info i could find... i would need to pull the pan to test the solenoid?
thinking back to an issue i feel might be related- I would be throttling down to jump onto the highway an my truck wouldnt shift up around 50-60 mph. It was really odd, it would get whichever gear an kinda fall on its face ( kind of like a 5 speed when you leave it in 2nd gear an ramp out rpms an then finally shift . Tough to explain...
also my starter got stuck on last week, also tough to explain haha.. seemed inportant to add to this
anyway its happened a couple times at that time no codes popped up. Ultimate question if it is located in the Pan should i just op to replace it? Or is there another route to take based on resistance readings? Haha (other than not replacing it if it test out fine?)
I like to test components before simply replacing them..... unless I am absolutely sure they have failed. Up to you though, not like the solenoids are hideously expensive.
3.7 ohms is what i measured across the solenoid that had the blue an purple wires going into it. Is that helpful at all to this situation?
i tried to get a measurement off of the solenoid with 4 probes but i couldnt get anything off of them.
Ok thanks for the input. Oddly enough the code is no longer there...
i did notice when draining my fluid it sure did look pretty full of sparkling metal shavings. Maybe its just ready to be done who knows. Its got 212xxx miles on it. From my understanding these 46res dont make it that long without at least one rebuild?
I had over 200K on my 96 with the 46RE, and it still shifted like new. It would occasionally whine about tcc performance, but, clear the code, and it would stay gone for a couple months.
Basically, if you take care of it, there is no reason it won't go 300K..... Of course, that assumes you took care of it since new..... which most of us have bought these second/third/fourth hand.
