Default 2000 tc sticking

I had to shift into fwd pulling away from the hay stack. After feeding and driving 6 miles down the dirt road at rancher speed I turned onto the highway. Started hearing what sounds like gears rattling in the tc. I have tried shifting back and forth, backing up a pretty good distance, killing it and shifting and it still seems like it’s partially engaged. Any ideas?

Driving on solid ground(asphalt) in 4WD can damage the transfer case.

Sometimes what happens is the CAD fails AFTER you engage 4wd. Switch the vacuum lines and see if the noise goes away
