More than likely, it's the HVAC. It's either wet or cooking. Then there's the foam seals on the blend/mode doors coming apart.

What would be the best easy way to fix this

Pull the dash, pull the heater box, take it apart, clean it to within an inch of it's life, fix any issues you find, and put it back together.

A fair bit of work, but, in your case, I think it's going to be pretty much required.

The foam that was used in the truck as others was an open cell polyester based foam. It breaks down and almost becomes dust. If you have been wiping your dash wondering where the dirty crumbs on the dash are coming from, it most likely is the disintegrated foam. We have been making blend doors since 09 and use a HVAC approved foam. This foam is polyether based and will not break down like that. We have a complete kit to replace all the foam and replace the doors and their drivers for the 2nd Generation Dodge.

Has anybody ever smoked in the vehicle? It might be you or a previous owner years ago. If they have, you may have mold growing on the smoke particles in your duct work. If not, is the drain on your a/c open? This lets condensate dribble out ad also keeps water from building up in the air box. You can reach down from above and flip the rubber tip to see if anything comes out. Do NOT go underneath. If it is stopped up, you will get a gush of really nasty water in the face. (I'd rather not say how I know this.)

Okay, you've got the drain open and the stench is still there. A quick and dirty way to clear it is to open the doors and windows wide open. With the truck running, turn the heat control off and turn the fan on high.Spray some Lysol disinfectant into the air intake at the base of the windshield. This will clear it up for a short time. When it comes back, you obviously have contaminants in the ducting. You have to be careful but you can use BG Frigi-fresh in it.

You have to be careful as the last time I used it, you had to drill a small hole in the plenum housing and spray it into the cooling coil. Don't drill too deep so you don't damage the coil. They may have easier applications now.

First place i would look is behind the rear seat and the sides. The gasket leaks for the third brake light/bed light and allows water in. It then runs down the back then along the sides. if you ever took the third brake light lens off you will see from years of being on there it warps. So even if you get a new gasket it will probably leak. You need to remove the lens and file it so it's level and then it will seal against the gasket. If you remove the seats and pull up the carpet the padding will be wet around the back and the sides.
