Default Clunk in transfer case from takeoff or stop

2000 dodge 1500. I’m hearing a clunk on acceleration from stop or sometimes on stopping. I jacked up the truck on stands and put in neutral and can reproduce the sound by grabbing driveshaft and the sound appears to be in the transfer case. It is a single clunk when shaft starts to turn. I have tried turning the driveshaft in park no movement there. I just had the rear diff apart and gears appear good. Any ideas where I should start first. I don’t see play in U joints either.

Chain/gear slop in the t-case? It may be completely normal.

So the slop is a normal thing so no need to worry? This truck wasn’t very well maintained from previous owner so I’m fixing one thing at a time. I did find there was hardly any fluid in the TCase and I changed it and added new atf to it.

Yeah, so long as it doesn't make rude noises when in 4wd, you are probably alright.

no noises in 4x4 just the occasional annoying clunk.

thank you off to the next part then found oil in number 7 plug so I’m going to change the valve gaskets. Hope that will remedy that problem.

Are the steel tubes still on the heads where the spark plugs go? If they are, keep in mind they love to accumulate crap in there, and then drop it into the cylinder when you pull the plugs. Most folks just remove them completely, and call it a day. (they pull out, but not always very willingly. )

I will see if they come out I blew that area out with compressed air when I changed the plugs. Didn’t know the steel tubes were able to be removed.
