Default No Check Engine, No Codes, 10cyl 8L 4x4 Won’t go above 30MPH

Hey everyone, I just recently bought my first 1996 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 and it’s got symptoms of being stuck in limp home mode. But after attempting to clear limp mode, clearing OBD2 codes, Draining fluid & refilling, I still can’t get it out of limp mode. Has anybody had this issue where it’s not throwing codes but still not shifting out of first? I just ordered new Trans pressure solenoid, governor pressure sensor, and Overdrive lockup solenoid assembly. While I’m in there replacing those parts I’ll be retightening the bands as well. Everybody hope this is the fix!

What codes were in there before you cleared them?

My old man said he saw a Incomplete 02 cycle. But before I cleared it I triple checked and never saw the incomplete 02 cycle code.

That it?

So does it start in second, and just stay in second?

yeah I’m assuming it’s stuck in second rather than first because when you start it in P, bring it down to drive, and while I’m in D it won’t go past 25-30, (can’t tell the exact speed because speedos out right now). Shifting to 1 I’ll feel the trans jump a little bit but won’t go faster than 30, popping it into 2nd there’s no rumble, or seemingly no reaction in the trans and it still won’t go past 30. Making me think it’s stuck in 2nd gear.

Speedo not working? I suspect that right there is a big part of your problem. If the PCM doesn't know how fast you are going, it doesn't know what gear it should be in....... Fix that first. See if the rest of your problems go away.

I never even noticed but the ABS light is on. If there’s a problem with the ABS system that my basic OBD tool won’t read. Could that be triggering it to go into limp mode?

The ABS light is likely a product of the non-functioning speedometer as well.

What year is your truck?
