Unless the CAD has been bypassed the front driveshaft shouldn't be turning while in 2wd.

I had a mystery ticking noise in my truck since I bought it. Could REALLY hear it when driving past guardrails, or concrete barriers. Had the front u-joint in the front drive shaft replaced when I had some trans work done, and the noise is now gone..... The front driveshaft may not be powered when not in 4x4, but, apparently, it can indeed spin....

It can spin just from the resistance of the spider gears in and fluid in the front axle, but you can hold it stationary with a strap or zip ties.

Yeah, but, I wouldn't wanna have to crawl under there when I wanted 4x4, to release it. It's quiet now, and the other joints appear to be ok, so, it ain't broke, I ain't gonna fix it.

Will do, thanks

Could it possibly be an issue with your double cardigan joint on the front driveshaft, a balance issue with the front driveshaft or an internal issue with the transfer case?
I'll grab some more up close pictures if maybe there's something obvious I'm missing. It seems like maybe I should probably replace the entire tranny/drive train at this point.. I don't want to but if its just going to break again when I put a new housing on..

For a short service history- about 5 months ago I did a coolant flush to get the heater working during the Texas freeze. That worked but it blew my head gaskets shortly after. That was fixed and then the transmission was throwing a code about a solenoid. Can't remember the exact code. Did a transmission flush, changed out the filter. Worked like a champ and then the overdrive housing cracked like the next day. I filled it up all the way with fluid, checked it in neutral.

Idk how a transmission flush would lead to an O/D housing explosion but it was the day before this happened.

I did go to the wrong website, woops. This one was more helpful but only pointed me towards one vendor whos 1500 miles away

Well thanks for all the help guys. I know what I need to do. I'll start up another post if I have a specific problem, will try to come back and post some updates here when I finally get it all done.

Thomas Bridges it would have to be under like $60 before shipping. If I buy it on ebay for $150 it's free shipping and if I have an issue with it it's easier to deal with it through ebay.

Personally, I'd remove the front driveshaft from the transfer case and check those U-joints for proper movement. Also, remove the yoke from the front differential and check that U-joint for proper movement. If you don't feel comfortable with checking, I'd take the complete front driveshaft to a driveline shop and have that front driveshaft checked out for balance and the U-joints for functionality. Also, I'd replace the rear driveshaft U-joints, too.
