Default Looking at a 2000 2500 Quad Cab

ok - I'm pretty new to the dodge scene. We've got a couple on our work fleet, and they've been pretty decent trucks, even though they've had trans work done. Anyhow, i'm going to go look at a 2000 Dodge 2500 4x4 Quad Cab this weekend. It's got the 5.9 gasser, it's a Sport model, and from the pics, it doesn't look too bad. it's got 140K on it, which i know is high, but each of our trucks in our work fleet have almost 200K on them, so that really doesnt worry me too much. it looks clean, and in decent shape. Does anyone have any advice as to what i should look out for when driving this truck? i know to pay attention to the trans - i'd LOVE to be able to drop the pan and look at it, but this rig is 2 hours away, so that wont be feasible for me to personally do that... But any other things i should look for? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks a ton! Attached is a pic of the truck (not the best pic, but...)

Looks just like my 99' 2500 sport, except mine has no badges or other labels on it; all black, gotta love it. Does this truck have a 60 or 44 in the front? Mine has the 60, makes my brother in law sick. lol. Really though, I wouldn't be afraid of it with 140K on it. As for the price, I've seen them higher and lower with about the same mileage around here (southern Indiana) so who knows. Doesn't sound to bad to me.

price seems to be a bit high in my opinion, i just bought a 1995 Ram 1500 4x4 with the 5.9L, it only had 75,500 miles on it when i bought it, and i only paid 6,550 from an independent dealer, and that was in Maryland so. i dont know whaqt the differences would be if any

well - for one thing, i certainly wouldn't pay asking price - especially from a dealer. and in comparison to your truck, it is a 3/4 ton, and it's 5 years newer - i'm not knocking your truck at all - just stating the facts. here's the kbb numbers that i found for this particular truck:

Trade in - $7660
Private Party - $9960
Sugg. Retail - $13,330

so that 8995 looks pretty much middle of the road. i'll see how the truck looks in person (and how it drives, sounds, etc), and go from there.

Anyone know anything that i should pay close attention to regarding this truck?

thanks

Excellent. Same here. I'd say if you don't hear/see any problems, go for it. I enjoy the heck out of mine.

Thanks - we'll see how it goes. I've done my homework on this one - i've obtained the build sheet from Dodge, and i've run a carfax on it as well. it's a one-owner truck, with a lot of nice options, that looks good in the pics. i really am starting to want it bad, and i'm hoping i don't get there, and find something devastatingly wrong mechanically, or something else... we'll see what happens. thanks again!

well - we went and looked at the truck. we drove all of 125 miles away to see it. initially, i was VERY impressed. the body and the interior were practically spotless. it had a bit of rust forming right above the exhaust pipe, but it was surface, and very minor. i got in, started it up, and it started and ran really well for a truck with 139K on it. we checked the front steering, and it was very tight. next, i go to put it into drive, and the first thing i notice, is the gear shifter (auto) was VERY hard to move. I don't know if it was in the trans, or if it was in the column (felt in the column to me), but i didn't like it. once we started driving it, i noticed the brake pedal was a bit soft. no biggie - brakes are easy. next, we noticed a "whine" coming from the rear end. i could make it come & go away while playing with the accelerator, so i'm pretty sure it was wear on the ring & pinion. we also heard some noise towards the front, either power steering, or a trans noise... (we were starting to get scared at this point). also, when applying the brake, there was a pretty loud "pop" from the rear axle. it did in both directions - we couldn't determine 100% whether it was the brakes, or something in the rear axle. one thing we did notice, is that it looked like the rear pinion seal was "cleaned up", like it was leaking. So, with all of the little things we noticed, we kind of got scared, and walked away for the time being. plus it didn't help, the sales person was kind of a typical sales person, if you catch my drift. anyhow, i really liked the truck, other than the mechanical quirks we noticed. overall, we're guessing the rear axle will need some work, new brakes all around, and possibly some trans/shifter work. the trans did shift fine (1st to 2nd, downshifting, etc.), but with the shifter being "tight", it's a little worrysome. with the body the way it was though, i REALLY still like this truck. i'm just worried about chancing it with the mechanical problems. plus, i dont know how low the guy would go on price. he's asking 8995. oh - one more thing, the drivers window wouldn't go down. anyhow, i certainly wouldn't pay full price for it since it needs some work (whether the salesperson would admit it or not - he wouldn't). anyone have any advice? I'm looking for any opinions, or recommendations anyone might have. THANK YOU very much! happy new year!

YB
