Default Transmission Swaps?

Hi all. I have a 1999 Dodge Ram 2500 2wd with the 8.0 liter V10 and a 4-speed automatic. I don’t know which transmission it is but I’ve been told these are weak transmissions. Has anyone in this group upgraded to a better unit and if so which one? I pull a large 5th wheel camper with it and I’d like a plan B if it goes out. Thanks.

Post 95 V10 and Diesels have the 47RE transmission. Personally I don't consider them weak but the Cummins guys tend to crank up their power and torque and then complain about the trans failing. The transmissions also need proper maintenance to last. If you're really concerned there are plenty of beefed up transmissions available from various vendors. They are still 47RE though, AFAIK there are no other transmissions that can be adapted.

What is the recommended maintenance? Anything beyond filter and fluid change? Thanks.

Fluid/filter change, and band adjustment every 30K miles or so.

All the stuff the the diesel guys use is applicable. Sonnax hard parts, servos and pistons, valve body mods, upgrade cooling, deep pan. Small things add up. Upgrade torque converter, don't need a 1600USD billet Cummins unit, but Hughes makes a really stout towing converter, tighter than factory. The upgraded OD clutches and stiffer cover prevent the common failure point in an overheated towing transmission of OD clutch burnout. I have one, nice addition to power as well. Any Cummins diesel tranny shop knows the 47RE inside and out.
