Have a 2001 ram with the 5.2 with the auto 4 speed with 150k miles on it. I always wanted to do something performance to it because Im young with my first V8 and where I live there are a lot of hills and Im sick of it downshifting on the interstate when I'm going up a hill doing 70+ and revving to 3500rpm. I'm not asking if it would help with that problem because I was gonna do it regardless. I was wondering if my motor with 150k miles on it will take it. I was thinking about Harland Sharp and maybe new springs. This truck is my daily and I maintain it well.

 

They ain't cheap, but, they do add some power.

Have you had a look at the plenum yet? There is a stickied thread on that particular topic. Lots of information on the first couple pages for ya. Low power is one of the symptoms of a blown plenum. Stretched timing chain is another possible cause.

I don't know if my plenum is bad, Ive driven it 20k miles and it has had the same power for all 20k. However, it could have gone bad before I owned it so i'll have to do some investigation. what is your opinion on the rockers at 150k miles (assuming that the plenum is good)?

 

Anything that improves performance can't really be seen as a 'bad thing'.

You can yourself a couple hundred bucks and get the 1.7rr from scorpion performance for a small block Ford engine 302/351w make sure they are 5/16 pedestal mount. Reused your retaining plates from your stock lifters. Other then that the box will have the correct length bolts. I have these in my 5.9 with hemi fever tune. And it spins up to 5300rpm with ease. Doesn’t feel like it has any valve float. I picked up my rockers on Amazon if they still carry them. You will either have to get aftermarket valve covers or beat the baffles in with a piece of wood and a hammer on the stock ones. (That’s what I did) other then that enjoy the nice little baby cam sound they give you and whatever performance you feel in the butt dyno

 

Are these better than the harland sharp ones? They seem to be a little bigger and a little cheaper. If they are adjustable I don't know how to adjust them.

 

I've known a few people that have put the 1.7 rockers on the 318/5.2, and all have liked the mod. Most added a cold air intake and a 180 stat.

 

And headers.

 

im not going to say they are better but they are just as good. It’s just a different brand. Harland sharp makes the 1.7 because they are the only manufacturer that makes 1.7 for the magnum engines from what I’ve read. The scorpions are made for small block ford engines but a lot of people don’t know that they use the same 5/16 pedestal mount. They are 1.72 ratio competed to the HS 1.7 but you’ll never know the difference. They are not adjustable. Just torque to 20ft lbs I think according to the dodge manual. I’ve had them in for about 20-30k miles now and a little over a year. And I beat on my engine pretty good. It sees rev limited a couple times a week Atleast. Paired with long tube headers. Sct on 93 octane. 180 thermostat. Dual E fans. Cold air intake. And 4.10 gears. And all together it’s definitely a completely different truck.
