I have a 5.9 97 ram 1500 2wd automatic. And my truck recently had problems shifting gears and iver the pst month it got terrible to where i had to manually shift to second. But it didnt affect any other gears just 1st to second. So thought it could be the tps so i changed it out. But i FORGOT to unplug the batter. Drove it for around thirty minutes and my shifting issues got dramatically better then started coming back. And my rpms were surging at idle. Disconnected battery for a little bit then finished driving. The surging is gone but now it still shifts at around 3k rpm for 1st to 2nd. And now the other gears seem to be shifting higher as well.
solutions??
When is the last time the trans was serviced? Bands adjusted?
i bought it in feb at around 260k miles. Today it has 282. It had two owners before me and the guy i bought it from left me all his mechanic receipts. It looks like he never had it rebuilt or replaced. And only serviced once in 2016 bc he blew a cooler line so they replaced his fluid and filter
i also had it blow a line soon after i bought it and changed all the fluid.
the previous owner bought it in 2007. So there is a possibility its the original trans with only one servicing since 07
Change the governor pressure sensor and solenoid as well.
ran into somethinf unexpected. Theres no magnet in my transmission pan? I guess who ever messed with it before took the magnet out 🤦♂️ so i dont even know how much damage has been done. Other than probably a lot because of all the floating debris. But i slowly dumped all the trans fluid out into clear containers from my oil catch pan and i didnt see any chunks or any bad signs. Just that the fluid was borderline brown black
edit also ran into something else unexpected one of the screws on the filter was stripped out

As for the screw... that's gonna be interesting. Can you heli-coil it?
i have never done that i mean i can attempt it im sure i can fogure it out. The threads i dont think are stripped. Just head of the screw. Can i remove it with some pliers? And get a new screw
Ah, ok. If you can get a grip on it with pliers, give it a shot.
thanks man you have been very helpful.
so this is my first pan ive done and i found a few large chunks of metal shavings that come together like a rock but they break apart pretty easily.
As you can see they are pretty big. I found like ten that were a third as big. And just a huge amount of little shavings everywhere that were clumped into small *****. When i emptied the basin
