I have a 2000 ram 2500 with the 5.9 mag. My entire power steering system is fairly new and only when its a little colder out or the truck has been sitting for a bit, the power steering pump will have these short bursts of sort of like a howling sound. Its not a whine or what a usual symptom of a bad pump is. It only does it while idling and once its warmed up it stops. I checked the fluid and its perfect. And it works fine too, no issues at all. I'm not really too sure why this is. If anyone has any input please let me know

 

Are using ATF+4 or Power steering fluid?

Try putting in a cap full of ATF.

 

Pumps do that. Especially aftermarket ones. If it works fine and steers fine, you're way ahead of the game.

 

I’m at college right now but I got plenty of atf at home. I’ll throw in a cap full in then and see how it works

 

I wouldn't do that. Instead of mixing fluids (these pumps require regular PS fluid), jack it up and attempt another bleeding by turning slowly lock to lock with it off. May just have a little air.

So i finally got the time and jacked it up and bled it. A total of like 3 bubbles came out but now it makes no noise. cant believe that little of air could do that. Thanks for the help guys

 

Cool. Glad it's quiet. My system is noisy but I'm pretty sure it's the crappy second Redhead gear.
