I don't think that one spring is going to be the sole cause of your troubles..... given it's behavior, it sure sounds like something blew up.... No debris in the pan though, is puzzling.

shoukd I just get the rebuild kit and do it up?
I would replace all of the springs, as the old reused springs will be broken fairly soon. It took me quite some time to find a kit that had all the required OD springs/clips. Not all transmission rebuilder replace all the wearable parts and tend to reuse used parts.

Just a FYI- not all rebuild kits have all the required parts, even the master kits. You have to go thru each kit to make sure they have the parts you need.

Careful pulling that out. If the snap ring is indeed broken, it has the potential to LAUNCH that heavy housing....... The spring in there is like 800 lbs per inch.

A rebuilt trans for a couple hundred bucks??? Not sure I would trust that, considering for some kits, just the parts are 3-400 bucks.....

Have a look here for kits.

well I just went over the complete overhaul procedures and it’s too much for me to do, specialty tools n such. I don’t have the time plus I’ve been quoted $400 for one with a 24mo/24kmile warranty, so I’m probably just gonna do that.

on a side note, I’m about to check hydro pressures, but one procedure says to take off the gearshift (and throttle ) from the trans, but then it says to shift the gears…. How the f am I supposed to do that?

OOOOH and one other thing: After getting a governor solenoid thingy from a wreck, I initially got the rectangle shaped connector because I have a 2001, but get this: the trans that’s installed has a round connector! DING DING DING we have a replacement trans in place! And from research I’ve been doing, with the driveshaft being locked in certain gears and only spinning one way, I’ve got a physical problem, not a hydro or relay problem.

Any thoughts??

Hhhmmm..... The round connector was for the older versions as I recall, and changed right around the 2000 model year. (when they went to the square connector) Trouble is, while the sensors do the same job in the trans, they report back differently, so, using on older trans in a newer truck *should* have the PCM whining about the trans overheating, shortly after you start it up..... going the other way, I suspect it won't engage O/D, as the PCM thinks the fluid is too cold. I believe the external connectors (8 pin) are exactly the same though.....
