46RE No Reverse
Hhhmmm..... The round connector was for the older versions as I recall, and changed right around the 2000 model year. (when they went to the square connector) Trouble is, while the sensors do the same job in the trans, they report back differently, so, using on older trans in a newer truck *should* have the PCM whining about the trans overheating, shortly after you start it up..... going the other way, I suspect it won't engage O/D, as the PCM thinks the fluid is too cold. I believe the external connectors (8 pin) are exactly the same though.....
You can run a pressure test and that will tell you if the pressure is adequate for the servos(reverse). But with the drive shaft only going in one direction there is a mechanical issue somewhere. Can drop the valve body and get a closer look inside. If you remove it take the park rod off the valve body don't pull it out.
Most of the rebuild kit that I looked into don't have the OD snap ring kit. How does the direct/forward drums look? I'm in the process of rebuilding my 46RE 4wd. Mine the front/rear bands where shot, but my clutches/steels looked decent. I have two transmissions for parts a 2wd and a 4wd transmission, so I can cobble stuff together for my build.

Hey Chris have you dropped the pan on the transmission yet? More than likely you just have OD unit failure (snap ring broken), as you will lose OD and reverse gears when this happens. The OD unit can be unbolted from the main housing and repaired. If the front/rear bands are still tight without lots of wiggle (clearance), you could probably get away with just rebuild the OD unit.
I finished taking mine apart yesterday, found the rear servo had a crack in it and wasn't moving to well doing the air tests. My all of my clutches (direct/forward/OD) where in decent shape, just my front band had a quite abit of wear.

Ok so here goes: 2001 1500, 5.2l 4x2 Auto
wont engage reverse. Acts like it wants to but it’s as if the parking brake is on, which it’s most def not. I’ve got the truck up on stands all around, and I can spin the tires but the driveshaft only goes counter clockwise in any gear other than park. I’ve been to a wrecking yard and those spin both ways. I’ve dropped the pan- no shards of metal, no visible damage.
previous to this happening, my gear indicator never worked and I never had overdrive- well, maybe once ina blue moon not not regularly. Near the end, it seemed to be burning thru tranny fluid.
what do I have? Bad torque converter? Need a new tranny?

my 2001 did exactly the same thing check your servo for 1st and reverse the reason you have no overdrive is your computer cant communicate with th3 older overdrive solenoid you have to change overdrive solenoid in ilder tranemission to an 01 solenoid as the overdrive is electric signal only that was my cure hope it helps it did for me when the servo blows it wont allow reverse to engage therefore its stuck in forward gears and it wont throw a code
OK YALL!
i got a trans out of a wreck, and it’s installed.
two things: The ‘new’ transmission seems to be about an inch or 1.5” shorter than the one i took out. Any insight as to why that’d be would be outstanding.
next is the shift linkage. Stupidly, I loosened the bolt holding the link in its proper spot, and I seem to be having a little trouble getting it back to perfect. I think there is too much play / torque loss in the multiple fail points along the path to the shifter itself, and I’d love any tips or ideas on how to clean up its inherent sloppiness…. I may post this as a new thread, just for fresh eyes on the matter, but if anyone can help with that, thanks as well!
