Default Are gearboxes interchangeable?

So basically im wondering if 94-02 steering gearboxes are interchangeable for 2wd. My buddys truck had a completely messed up gearbox. And i pulled a 98 gearbox for his 01. And he installed it. And said the wheels go left when he turns the steering wheel right.
he thinks they arent compatible.

i think he did something wrong

He did something wrong. So far as I know, the trucks all used the same box, regardless of weight rating. Only difference might have been steering ratio.

thanks man. I think he put the pinion back in wrong. Thats the only way his wheels would be going the wrong way right?

All boxes are the same. He put the pitman arm on wrong. Flip it 180. When sitting in the cab, when the wheel turns right, the output shaft turns counter-clockwise. So if the connecting tie rod or pitman arm is installed wrong it can turn left or right.

Yeah, I think he has the arm off the steering box facing the wrong direction.

They should be the same. I put a 99 steering box in my 02 2500 back in January and I have had no problems with it
