I coated it with clean motor oil

Some folks have had good luck with addressing leaking small block rear main seals by using the old style rope seal used with the earlier model 360 motors (in service just prior to the magnum 5.9 motors). There also used to be a "special" rear main bearing used for worn motors to channel oil back towards the oil pan that Direct Connection/Mopar Performance used to sell. You can make your bearing act the same way as the "special" bearing by cutting two diagonal grooves into the bearing, as shown in the still available big block rear main bearing still sold by Mancini Racing - https://www.manciniracing.com/rbanlemabe.html

The rope seals sucked that's why they where replaced with the current version. And the cranks had small groves in them for the rope seals.

now, the first time I replaced it, I think I did have it backwards.
The sharp edge of the seal needs to face in towards the motor.
