Yup my 97 has the VSS on the tail shaft of the transfer case. I bought an 01 transfer case that doesn't have that because they moved it to the rear axle in 98. I am working on figuring out how to convert this 01 case to work in a 97 truck which is what the diagrams where. I responded asking what the "thing" was but then ran across those diagrams finally after trying to find them.

Unfortunately as I look now those notches are pretty important as they hold the snap rings that hold the speedo gear in place which means I also need to source a pre 98 output shaft for this transfer case or I get sketching and make my own notches.

I dunno if they're the same from NP241DLD to NP231 but I can sell you this one and ship it to you if it'll work. We can keep it affordable for you, not looking for a mint.

The Sonnax transfer case saver is the same across the 31 and 41 so all the diameters might be the same.....?

Otherwise, yeah, I'd throw it in my LeBlond and grab a grooving tool but you'd need to know exact locations and minor OD's

I would like to make this one just be able to drop in if I need to use it vs having to figure that out when the truck is down. Thank you for all the help though. It has been very helpful
Drive gear for the VSS. On these trucks, its just a gear driven tone generator. (which made the conversion from mechanical, to electronic speedo easy.)

When adjusting the band inside the tranny pan, what tool do you use? It looks like a square with the locknut, but I can't find a metric or standard socket that will fit the square adjustment screw. The other band adjustment on the outside of the pan is a T40 torx bit so that's easy.

And 8 point, or 12 point socket should fit. I think its something like 1/4 inch.

Update on my transmission issue. I dropped pan changed fluid and filter. Now to the part I deserve to be s$*t on for... I don't know why but I'm guessing when I put this engine in I looked at the dip stick wrong for where the level should be and way over filled it... I went to the ripples in the dip stick instead of the correct lines.... so story short changed fluid/filter nothing else. Filled to the correct level and tested. To nobody's surprise with the correct fluid levels it shifts like a dream.... so moral of the story is I didn't pay attention and I was the one that caused the whole issue. So now I deserve to hear what everyone has to say about that.

This is the same as the saying goes "measure twice cut once". Check it twice to verify you weren't going blind the first time.
