Default What trans comes in a 1998 dodge ram 1500

Im swapping my 1995 dodge ram 1500 truck to a manual and im pulling a transmission out of my 1998 dodge ram 1500 parts truck tonight 3/8/2022 and i was wondering what manual transmissions came in the 1998 dodge ram 1500? I know the nv4500 is 1 but is there anymore and how do i tell what trans it is once i get it out?

1500's got the NV3500 five speed. The problem you will run into is the 98 trans won't have the provision for the vehicle speed sensor on the tailshaft. If your truck is a 4x4, won't be a problem, as the sensor would be on the t-case.

The 5.2 also got the NV3500, it never came behind the 360, that's why you don't see any 360/manual trans 1500s. In the heavier trucks, they didn't come with a 5.2 and got the NV4500 trans.

I got the trans out and it ended up being a nv3500. Thats what the bell housing says anyways. but i have 1 more question. the truck im putting it in is a 360 auto. It has a 318 auto ecu in it. Will i have to change the right now? i plan to in the future but will it work with that ecu? My friend has a ford that he manual swap with a auto ecu and it will redline and try to shift early thinking its a auto when its not. Im assuming ill have the same problem but it will work.

You may have some idle issues, and the 5.2 PCM will run the 5.9 a bit lean in open loop..... Closed loop won't matter, as the O2 sensor will correct mixture ratio. The auto trans PCM will also set some codes for the auto trans that ain't there any more.

okay so my dash will be lit up like a Christmas tree lol. I plan on getting the right PCM eventually because i want to swap the entire truck over to obd2. Its a completely different truck then what it was. If you run the VIN its a 1995 318 auto thats red. Now its grey, 360, manual and half of the truck is parts off a 98-99 lol

For OBDII, you want the PCM/wiring harness/etc out of the 96 or 97 truck. Go any newer, and EVERYTHING about the electronics changed.... Which means, you would need to swap the entire dash as well.
