Default 2001 Ram 4x4 5.9 Gas. Dead, Then Alive, Then Dead...

Trying to keep an 01 Alive. Think I've determined that it only dies when the cruise control is on. It will fire back up and run. I have not had it die while cruise was off. Died once when making a slight turn and also on a straight away. Anybody dealt with this? Thank you for the help and time it took to respond.

Does the cruise work properly?

I really don't see how cruise could kill the engine..... There is really not a lot to it. The PCM sends a signal to the switches in the steering wheel, the switches modify that signal, and send it back to the PCM...... If it dies when you push a button.... maybe there is a short in the return signal wire back to the PCM??? Aside from that, I think it's just coincidence. Since it starts right back up..... That's gonna make it fun to find.

Ughhh! Cruise works fine, even when it shuts off the truck. It starts back up and cruise works?? Maybe it's the crank / cam sensor AGAIN!

Did you scan the PCM when the failure/engine shutoff occurred to see if you had any stored or pending codes? I had a similar intermittent issue like the one you're describing. When the motor shut off, I was able to pull the truck off the road and hook up my scanner. It flagged a pending code that pointed to the crank sensor failing. I replaced it with a Mopar crank sensor and have no more issues.

Truck stalled while driving again: Drove half way home with no cruise control, no stall, turned on cruise and within 5 minutes the truck died. It did start back up while coasting and I drove home with no cruise? Got home and checked codes and had 2, P0320 and P0442. The P0320 appears to relate to the crank sensor, just can't figure out why it acts up when the cruise is on? Probably am going to replace crank sensor and see if that fixes it. Thanks again all.

Sounds similar to my intermittent engine shutdown issue. Please be sure to install a Mopar/dealer crank sensor. The aftermarket crank sensors aren't the greatest and tend to be failure prone.
