Default Cam selection

Beating a dead horse most likely with this question, but here goes...Does anyone know where you can get a mild or hot street cam for the 2001 5.2 Magnum that doesn't cost 500 bucks. I'm starting a build and that is the main ingredient I need. I see prices for Ford and Chevy cams down in the 200 dollar range. Is it just supply and demand or will I have to drop 500? Any help would be appreciated.

I have found them for anywhere from 300 bucks, to over 600. Those on the lower end of the scale are generally for the LA motors.... The magnum cams are not inexpensive..... But yeah, chevy and ford motors are friggin' everywhere, dodge? Not so much.

Back in the day you could get a cam for under $100. Now $300+ for a roller cam is the norm. So why so much money? I would think that roller cams would be easier to make than flat tappet cams.

You could send your existing cam out to a cam regrinder to weld-up/re-grind your cam to a different profile to meet your needs. I had this done on an import I owned many years ago and the cam worked fine. They are definitely less expensive than buying a new camshaft.

I had given thought to the regrind avenue but wasn't sure how reliable it would be. Would the machine shop right up the road do this or is there a specific place it would need to go?

You would likely have to send it out to be done.... That said, it certainly wouldn't hurt to ask your local machine shop..... Cam grinding requires some pretty specialized equipment though, and most machine shops won't have it.

Re-ground can be great. Just be aware that you will have a reduced base circle and need longer pushrods. Usually.
Evidently since I don't "talk" a lot I can't post my NIB comp cam for sale... lol.

I'll help you add to your post count.
Not being a "modder," I am clueless: What is an "NIB comp cam?"
