Default 46re, metal in pan.

Hey guys,
had some tranny issues, so i dropped the pan to change filter, and found several little chunks of metal.
I will add some pics, but the best way i can explain them is, that they look like pez candy, at least the one thats in one piece does.
I already know that im looking at a rebuild I was just wondering if anyone could identify the pieces. I thought maybe they were pieces of a snap ring, but i dont think thats the case.
anyway, ill put some pics up.

Witht that out of the way Ill give a little history.
2001 Ram 1500 Sport 4x4.
Bought the truck for 2500 almost 2 yrs ago. previous owner said he had recently rebuilt the tranny, which im inclined to believe that he did in fact have the transmission out because it is now painted green.?????? who knows.
anyways, OD never did work quite right. it would go into OD occasionaly after having driven for quite a long while.
I didnt worry too much about it because i dont generally have a lot of interstate driving.
So the other day on a rather long trip she decided to hit OD and TC lockup. 1800 rpm at 70mph is way better than 3000, so i was happy. but it was short lived. after i stopped for minute to get something to eat The truck would not shift into 3rd gear, manually or otherwise. now she slipping in all gears. was into changing filter when i discovered the horror story that is the little chunks of metal in the pan.
Ok here are the pics. anyone got a clue what they are?

I don't recognize them just offhand.... But, if I had to hazard a guess, maybe rollers from a bearing, or the one-way clutch? In any event, gonna need a teardown.

Not the typical "OMG...There are parts in my Pan" I've seen.
But I agree, rebuild time.

I agree that its teardown time. as fa as the nature of the debris, well i dont think its bearing material. its just not hard enough. In fact its rather soft. Ive got another pic of the back side of one of the pieces. you can clearly see the two differrent kinds of metal.
Not that any of this matters, I was just curious as to where it may have came from. But I guess ill figure it out when i tear it down.

Not sure. Aluminum. I THINK. clad with something else. I'll check with a magnet when I get home from work.

Not aluminum. Steel and SOMETHING else. Looks like copper or maybe brass. Not sure. (See pic) Unfortunately this mystery is not gonna be solved soon. After valve body rebuild, new fluid and filter, I got third gear back. Gonna have to drive her and hope she holds together until I can save 500-1000$ depending on what all needs replaced. Then start the fun 5ask of of removing the damn thing. And yeah, it's 4wd, sooooo got a transfer case to deal with as well . Probably pull em both together.

Maybe see if you can find a rebuildable core at one of the local yards, and rebuild THAT one. Then, just swap it in.

Looks like one of the “fins” to the clutch plates…

The "fins" would be broken off at the end but these seem to be solid. My guess is it's part of the support ribs in a hub or drum. The "Steel and SOMETHING else" is probably from a brass busing that is being worn away. Here is an exploded view take a look..
