Default remanufactured 46re

first post here gentlemen, please bear with me.

I bought a used 99 Ram 2500 4x4 5.9 gasser with 137k miles, that needs a new tranny. It's just gonna be a daily driver 7-8000 miles a year, might pull a 10,000# trailer on 100 mile short hauls 10-12 times a year.

Is there any recommendation on where to get a remanufactured one or which ones to stay away from?

thx, Al

You can also get a rebuilt kit and and any other goodies that replace the stock parts and have someone locally rebuild it. Does your truck have optional trailer package? If so you will already have the trans cooler if not it's a good idea to get one.

thanks for the link. It's a bit more than I was looking to spend, was hoping to keep it in the 2-2500 range.

I've asked around and really nobody around here rebuilds trannys anymore.

True.... If you have to have the trucked towed, that gets expensive quick.

Are you planning to remove the transmission from the truck yourself? If so, see if you can find someone or a shop to perform a bench rebuild on your existing transmission. Many shops no longer perform bench rebuilds in my area, as they have a hard time warranting a transmission installed by someone other than the shop that built it, however, you should be able to find a place with a bit of research. Once you find that place that will take on the bench rebuild, I've found that its worth it to drive the transmission to them to rebuild it, even if the rebuilder's location is a bit out of the way. It's not like you have the transmission rebuilt regularly...

Could do either, I have forward gears, no reverse.

Anybody have feedback on Shift Rite trannys?
