Default Speedometer Question

This is hopefully a quick question and answer issue. After I replaced my Crank Sensor. I noticed once again loss of speedometer. I had this maybe a few months ago and ended up replacing the one of the rear end and all was well. My question is the instrument test. I did it and all the needles moved as suppose to but the speed needle. I couldn't remember if the last time I did it if it moved or not? I didn't get any codes and the check engine light as always isn't on either. I'm not sure if the problem is in the cluster it's self or maybe one of the sensors went out? I swear this truck likes to keep me guessing. lol

It's a 99 ram 1500 5.2. I went out last night and did the test a few times and all the needles did as they should. I'm not sure why it didn't the first time? Anyway, Like I said earlier I replaced the one on the back axle. I have a new one that goes into the transmission but where I put it is the question. I do have a few deep puddles on my road to deal with that I'm sure is over the axles so my guess would maybe water may have got into the one I replaced? I don't mind if they need to be replaced but my question is how would you prevent water from doing the same thing? Sorry if I am getting ahead of myself.lol. Also thanks for the advice on the crank sensor. It seems to have fixed that problem.

Your speedo gets its cue from the sensor on the rear axle. If the PCM isn't getting a signal, it should whine about it. Have a scanner you can plug in, and check it?

I had an issue with my rear end sensor, and it was because my exhaust had a little leak near tailpipe and overtime the heat melted the actual wiring…replaced wires and got a new connector end for the sensor and all was good…..they didn’t look bad but when I cut them the old wires were green and dark black under the insulation

That's the problem no codes and my scanner shows nothing. My guess would be somehow water may have gotten it or the wires?

We have had some much rain lately that it constantly going through deep puddles. The exhaust is in real good shape. Its raining now so I don't know when I will get the chance to get under there and see whats going on. I'm on hold for now.

Is it a tad bit wet?

I got sprinkled on while mowing today..... thought something felt funny, and then saw the drops on the hood of the tractor. Clear blue sky above me..... (and no birds either.)

Will you scanner read live data? Might check and see if the PCM is getting a speed reading.
