Default Tranny issues

So as my fiance was driving our truck (2001 Dodge ram 1500 5.2L V8) we have an automatic transmission. Anyways as he was driving it she wasnt wanting to shift into second gear and she took forever to shift and we stopped and check the transmission fluid and she was fine. 4 days prior we replaced the tranny filter and gasket and all the fluid. There was regular Gunk and minor metal shavings in the pan. We checked the transmission fluid it didn't smell burnt and it was still bright red, when she finally shifted to second gear we were heading towards the stop sign and we stopped, as we were leaving the stop sign RPMs skyrocketed and we coasted off the road. There is no fluid coming out from the tranny pan nothing there was also no smoke coming from the transmission at all. We've blown a previous transmission so we know what it looks like and sounds like. When we get in and start her up she'll start and when you go to shift her from the steering column she will shift in the drive and all the gears but she will not move in drive. I put her in reverse and she will go back in reverse about 10 feet then stop. What could be the issue for this and is there a way to fix it or is the transmission completely blown? I have to have this truck for work and when our previous transmission blew it wasn't like this and the flex plate was just replaced 5 months ago and the starter was just replaced 2 weeks ago. I can't take it to get the codes read and I don't know anyone with a code reader. Does anyone know what could cause this or has had something similar to this? I'm tight on money until I get paid next. Is it worth fixing or should I just get another vehicle? Also sorry for the long post I just wanted as much detail as I could.

Try the key dance. Chrysler has kept that even with OBD II. At no time do you want to bump the starter. You want to have a note pad and pen handy. Turn the ignition key on, then off, then on, then off, then on and leave it on. Bumping the starter just tries to start the truck. If you don't go to the start position, just the run position, the computer will go into self test mode. If you have a mechanical odometer, the check engine light will flash. On flash followed by two flashes is code 12. This means the battery has been disconnected in the last 50 to 100 key starts. Code 55 means the end of test session. Each code will read out twice. Keep track of any codes besides those two. If you have a digital odometer, the code will read out in the odometer. This will give you a start point to track your problem down.

Key dance only works up to 97 i believe. Is the check engine light on? Did you check the fluid level in neutral?

It works later than that. It worked on my '02 Ram 1500 just fine.

Are you checking fluid level in Neutral? Checking in park doesn't give an accurate reading......

Honestly what does this have to do with the transmission? Because I asked about the transmission not the starter. I just replaced that I'm asking about tranny issues not starter.

We put it in neutral when we check it that's what it said to do on the transmission dipstick and we check it in neutral all the time we never checked it in park. When we check it it was bright red like we just added new fluid and it needed some so we added only half a quart and then waited,5 minutes and checked again then added the rest because she was still low. After that she had it at the full line and dwe waited about another 10 minutes and she was still at full.

When you do the key dance and you bump the starter, the computer will not go into self test mode. You are turning the system to run and off repeatedly. Never to start.

Is it the three or four key on dance?

You can read the fault codes regarding the transmission issue with the key dance.
