Default V10 swap

I have a 97 2500 4x4 lost oil pressure stated making a horrible noise, drained oil found copper or brass shavings belive to have spun a bearing. Question is should I rebuild or swap engine. I have found a 99 v10 with "w" Vin will this interchange, or do I have to make changes?

I think that should be a direct swap. There might be some differences in sensors, but, I suspect thats it.

A spun bearing is rather easy to fix rather than a motor swap. Drop the pan and investigate.

Just curious on your thoughts here, to me a spun bearing means crank/block grinding and oversize bearing? As opposed to a quick swing

Depends on how bad the journal is. I have had some success with just 'dressing' the journal with some VERY fine grit emery cloth. If the journal is noticeably grooved, yeah, crank needs to come out.

V-10s suffer from poor filtration, due to pathetic stock filter most often used. Bypasses far too much oil. The back of your heads will be sludged up as well, oil pump and front cover/pump housing in sad shape.
Engine or transmission is coming out to change rear main seal.
Bearing knock is one thing. I've changed rod and crank bearings in the truck. It is what it is, can't warranty it, but would last for awhile.
Changing a bearing with that much damage is a fool's errand. You have collateral damage in other bearings and a scored crank. Check top end for oil starvation problems.
Heads on Magnums are a crap shoot. Best if replacement engine was known quantity/quality. Folks who don't work on V-10s are not primary sources of advice.

The v10 used to have its own filter, much larger. You can still get it under a Ford part number, don't recall of the top of my head what it is. Back of heads are always sludged because the oil pools back under valve cover (take one off and be prepared it will run down the motor) due to the angle the motor sits at. Why did it loose pressure? Pull the front cover, which is also the oil pump housing, to inspect the pump and make sure the oil pump cover bolts haven't backed out on you. Won't do any good to put in new bearings just to trash them right away from a bad pump. Also a good idea if the pump is in good shape to re-torque those bolts with some loctite.

The WIX 51515 is a big capacity filter for the V10, it's the one I use. You can cross that number to get your favorite brand.

Subject of oil filters: https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...ml#post3359542

I have since changed to the later model heavy duty T-style steering linkage. 51773 WIX fits just fine. Filtration is not all about microns, still have to get the oil through a filter that is not in bypass. Sad little Mopar thimble was not up to the task.
