Hey all, I'm looking for an overdrive or lockup solenoid for a 99 Ram 1500 with the 46RE transmission.

I bought one from O'Reilly and it doesn't look anything like the one I've got in my tranny. The part number I got from O'Reilly is TCS27, which appears to have only three wires and one connector. However, the solenoid inside my transmission has three connectors and probably 15 wires.

I found something that looks almost identical to the solenoid I have currently from Mopar (Transmission Overdrive Solenoid - Mopar (52118500)), but it says it's for a 2002 25/3500 truck.

I have a Jasper rebuilt transmission.

Does anyone know if this solenoid will work in my transmission or is there more I need to know before I buy it?

 

Overdrive and lockup are two different things, which one are you looking for?

You're right, and I think I'm looking for lockup. The issue that I'm trying to solve is this: only when warm, and above say 40mph, the truck will start to grind/vibrate when I try to softly accelerate. Say for example if I'm going up a slight hill, if I just lightly push down on the accelerator, it will start to grind/vibrate. If it starts doing this, and I let go of the accelerator, and then immediately put my foot back where it was, it won't do this. Additionally, if at any speed I give the accelerator a hard push, the grinding/vibration does not happen. My hypothesis is that the transmission is failing to properly disengage lockup.

From my limited research, it appeared to me that it was a single solenoid which controlled both overdrive and lockup.

Which part, the Mopar or the O'Reilly part? The Mopar part looks closest to what's currently inside my transmission.

Two solenoids, one for lockup, one for O/D. The other two you see there are the governor pressure sensor, and solenoid. Should have an 8 pin connector. The part with two solenoids, and a three wire connector is for the RH trans.

 

So the part I got from O’Reilly is for the RH, and the Mopar part is the correct part, even though it says it’s for a 2003 heavy duty truck?

I have a 1500 with the 46RE.

 

The mopar part number is correct. 52118500. I looked it up on Rock Auto. They actually list the Mopar part, for 100 bucks and change.

 

Thank you! I saw that there was also a Standard Ignition on Rock Auto that matches (TCS45) and I can get that from O’reilly for a few bucks extra, and I can have it today with a lifetime warranty.

I swear, the only thing O’Reilly still has on Rock Auto is just how fast I can get new and replacement parts. As soon as O’Reilly loses that convenience factor goes away, they’re toast.

For me, its actually cheaper/easier/faster to buy local, than it is to get the better price on the part at Rockauto, and then get raked over the coals for shipping. But, I have been dealing with the same parts store for 30 years... (or more....) and they know me on a first name basis when I come in. They tend to give me nice discounts.

Working at a parts store ended up being so helpful for keeping these old trucks running! You get to know everybody at every parts store in your area and you get to mooch off of that sweet sweet employee discount for years and years.
